From time to time in worship I find myself fully in the presence of the Holy, don't get me wrong I know and even sense God's presence in and through worship, but just sometimes the air itself become Holy and God draws very close. I sensed that this year in the string of services between the 22nd 25th December... yes Christmas, and they showed me the glory of the incarnation in different ways.

The 22nd December began with our Family Carol Service at New Central Methodist Church, Blackpool, filled with joy and anticipation, it involved all ages from the youngest acting out the Nativity for us to the, lets say more mature members, who had formed a choir! I think we forget that joy is a spiritual fruit, it is something more than happiness, deeper and more welcoming, and joy was present with us. There was a wonderful Holy moment when one of the older children who had played the Inn Keeper in the Nativity approached the manger and gently stroked the face of the doll representing Jesus and whispered, "isn't he cute". It was totally off script and came over to all as an unconscious act of worship that drew us in. Just wonderful.

Later that day and another Carol Service drawing in a diverse group of people at North Shore, a
very different service, quieter and more reflective, people coming forward to receive anointing for healing and blessings. In put from the Montys youth group who helped us to think about darkness and light, and another Holy moment as an unusual tableau formed during our last carol, you'd have to be there to understand but it reflected a new and still fragile inclusivity in an unexpected way. Sometimes God steps in and fills the gaps we have inadvertently created.
The 23rd December brought our Comfort Zone Carol Service, the Comfort Zone Community is growing from and outreach project to serve the homeless and vulnerable people, together we are growing as friends and finding God in our shared humanity and vulnerability. The Carol Service showed this, we chose and sang as we went, this was interspersed with stories of pain and hope, encouragements and prayers for one another. When we reached our final carol "O come all ye faithful" we raised the roof, and God was tangibly present.

On the 24th we celebrated a Midnight Communion, this began at 10:00pm with soup, rolls, mince pies and tea. Oh and chocolates brought in by one of our local shop keepers! In fact we had enough mince pies left to feed an army and had to give them away by the box load. At 11:15pm we gathered in a circle and paused to pray, carols and prayers followed, and all through the evening our circle grew as people came in to join us, we began with 20 and finished with 38, there were prayers and tears and hugs. One young woman had lost both her dad and a new born son during the year and was heading home from the local pub when she saw the church lights on, she came to light a candle. In the midst of this we broke bread and celebrated God's gift of life and God was with us.

The 25th Christmas Day like the previous 3 services also at North Shore, an occasion for more joy, I always feel there is something Holy about Christmas day, it is nothing to do with presents, in fact as grumpy minister of the year I refuse to make a huge fuss about the gifts we have received and prefer to focus on the one gift given for all!

All of these occasions spoke to me of the incarnation in different ways, and invited me to peer into the depth of the well that Emmanuel offers us, God is with us! God not only in services, hymns and prayers but in the realities of all of life, God with us in family and friends, God with us in a sunset and a storm, the question is are we aware, are we willing to simply be ourselves in his presence allowing him to love us into fullness of life. I am blessed after what has been a difficult year to have been able to celebrate with my family this Christmastime starting on the 15th December right up until now... and his blessings continue for the truth is God is with us...
