It is my turn to set the Friday Five for revgals this week:
As I write this I am waiting for my new dishwasher to be delivered, it along with my washing machine and vacuum cleaner are household appliances that I consider indispensable! Others not so much, we decided not to replace our tumble drier when the old one finally gave out last year, and I can honestly say I haven't really missed it. My hubby Tim and I often disagree about which household appliances are really necessary and which ones aren't, we also enjoy a few luxury items, my one of favourites is a juicer, and Tim's is our all singing all dancing filter coffee maker- it has a thermos jug so the coffee stays nice and hot without the aid if a heat element.
So being in a domestic frame of mind I thought I'd ask;
1. What is the one appliance you simply couldn't be without?
Well excluding the cooker, which is definitely number one, it would be a toss up between a washing machine and a dishwasher, both of which I consider essentials, but if space demanded that I could only have one of these then the dishwasher would go and the washing machine would stay. I prefer to wash dishes by hand than towels and sheets and most clothes!
I do remember my grandmother would hand wash everything, and then feed them through an old fashioned mangle before hanging them out to dry, laundry demanded a whole day every week and the kitchen would fill with steam and the smell of soap suds. She refused any offers of a washing machine insisting that she did a better job!
2. What if anything would you happily give up?
As I have already said we gave up our tumble drier, using old fashioned airers when necessary and the outdoor line as much as possible. I would not have done this when my children were small and the laundry was often piled high, but now I hardly miss it, and I certainly don't miss the electricity bills. I guess it is also good on the environmental front too!
3. What is the most strangest household appliance you own?
Well although it is a fairly standard appliance, there is nothing standard about our filter coffee maker, it has all sorts of functions and settings, a thermos jug to keep the coffee warm, and looks a bit like a rocket. We bought Joanne (youngest daughter and confirmed coffee addict) one to take to University, then appliance envy took over and we bought one ourselves!
4. What is the most luxurious household appliance you own?
That has got to be the bread maker, again an appliance with lots of settings and functions, it is pure luxury to wake up to the smell of freshly baked bread, mmm.....
5. Tell us about your dream kitchen- the sky is the limit here....
My dream kitchen would be a mixture, it would have the warmth and friendliness and spaciousness offered by a traditional farmhouse ( OK fairytale farmhouse) kitchen, a big oak table and dresser, and an aga of course, combined with some really excellent state of the art appliances built in so as not to spoil the look and feel. A bit like this:
OK now back to reality, and back to work!
