Holy Mother, Holy Spirit
An address to the spirit by the Bishop of Cyrene reads I sing of the Holy Breath/Inspiration, the centre point of the Parent, the centre point of the Child: she is mother, she is sister, she is daughter; she has delivered (as midwife) the hidden root.Holy Mother, Holy Spirit
Nursing Mother
St. Ephrem speaks of the Spirit, Attuned to us is the Deity like a nursing woman to an infant watching the time for his benefits, knowing the time for weaning him, both when to rear him on milk and when to feed him with solid food, weighing and offering benefits according to the measure of his maturity
Whilst I like these pictures, they limit the role of Mother God to the nurture and care of infants, and whilst I would be the last person to decry the role of birthing and feeding, caring for and protecting our young ( goodness knows I have given birth 6 times, and had the privilege of feeding and nurturing 5 babies including twins)... I was pondering today the role of mother as adviser and watcher- for that is what my role has become- and I wonder if that is also a role of the Holy Spirit- who in Her infinite gentleness guides and directs only so far as we allow her to..... She does not butt in, but waits and hopes on our account- weeping over our brokenness, always ready to step in, to equip and empower, to guide and lead, as we Her children learn to have the humility to ask...
Heavenly Mother, save me from prideful thinking, save me from supposing I can go it alone.... lead and guide, equip and empower me in this life... help me to come to you... to be open to receive, not as an infant, but as an adult who realises that truly without you I am nothing.
