Welcome to Kainotes, this is my blog for presenting my art work and the thinking/ meditations that lie behind it. I will also be offering art work for sale and taking comissions through this site.

Kainotes is a greek word meaning newness, or more fully  it refers to the  the new state of life in which the Holy Spirit places us so as to produce a completely new state which is eternal life. It speaks of a transformation process which is what painting has become for me, it takes me beyond the confines of words. In some ways though the paintings are wordless words so for me they become abstract icons.

The painting featured here is a reflection on the seasons and the speed with which they turn. The poem asks questions of our real presence to this earthy world:

are you present,

here and now

in this flesh and blood,

bone and sinew 

existence?

Are you earthed and earthy,

conscious of your breath

living really living,

touching feeling 

seeing, hurting,

loving, this

pain and pleasured

life...

are you present,

really here?

This poem sprang from a conversation with my neighbour yesterday about our discomfort with our bodies and the ability to live as if they don't really matter. She had discovered a breast lump and has undergone treatment and been pronounced clear all within the space of weeks. She was talking about how so many of her friends do not even check their bodies, living as if they are not really there. She made me think!

Consider the lillies, a reflection on Matthew 6:

30-33 "If God gives such attention to the appearance of wildflowers—most of which are never even seen—don't you think he'll attend to you, take pride in you, do his best for you? What I'm trying to do here is to get you to relax, to not be so preoccupied with getting , so you can respond to God's giving . People who don't know God and the way he works fuss over these things, but you know both God and how he works. Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. Don't worry about missing out. You'll find all your everyday human concerns will be met. Matthew 6. The Message.
